Responsible New York takes the low road. I wonder the extent to which Golisano’s engagement with Pigeon will harm Golisano’s reputation politically. I mean, the guy is pretty beloved here for keeping the Sabres around and being a voice for reform. Pigeon is NOTA.
UPDATE: Jim Heaney goes into more revealing detail on his blog:
But the perpetrators slipped up. The attack flyer from Mothers and Fathers uses the same bulk mail permit as … Responsible New York.
Sloppy, sloppy.
Pigeon did a lot of ducking and weaving when I called to inquire.
I asked him what he knows about Mothers and Fathers Demanding Answers.
“I’m not going to comment,” Pigeon said. “I’m sure they will file their independent committee status, if it’s not filed already.”
Gee, Steve, how do you know they’re required to do so?
“I would assume, I don’t know that they do.”
Pigeon then resorted to the mantra he repeated throughout the balance of the interview.
“Everything we’re doing is within the law.”
Followed by:
“We’re not coordinating with the [Barbra] Kavanaugh campaign.”
How does he explain Mothers and Fathers using the same bulk mail permit as Responsible New York?
“Independent committees can work together under the law.”
So, you’re working with them, right?
“I think it will all come out in the reports.”
Is this the dirtiest campaign he’s been involved in?
“I don’t think this one is dirty.”
OK, Steve.
Pigeon went to lengths to vent his outrage over reports that Hoyt had sex with a member of the Assembly staff. This is the same Steve Pigeon who has been an unwavering loyalist to Bill and Hillary Clinton through thick and thin, including the Big Dog’s sexual escapades with intern Monica Lewinski.
I guess you could say Pigeon is practicing situational ethics. Among other things.
Heh.

it is true there is a full page ad in Artvoice asking you to vote for Barbra Kavanaugh….for STATE SENATE???!!! please tell me it’s true!!!
1776 Says:September 5th, 2008 at 9:36 am
Yes, it does say BK for State Senate. Even better–it uses Barbra’s campaign logo and looks exactly like the very few pieces of lit she has actually managed to pay for herself, right down to the pictures. If there is no coordination between Responsible New York and Barbra’s campaign, then WHY do the ads look EXACTLY alike.
Steve Pigeon is using Golisano’s money as his own personal vendetta fund, and Barbra is their willing pawn.

Of course, you read about this first here:
http://artvoice.com/issues/v7n36/news_briefs/more_campaign_literature_glitches
With a little extra detail here:
http://blogs.artvoice.com/avdaily/2008/09/04/all-golisanos-money/
And a little more detail to come today.
But Jim Heaney, the News’ computer-assisted reporter, might not have seen those stories online, which is probably why he didn’t credit Buck Quigley for his reporting.

“Independent committees can work together under the law.”
Bullshit.
That’s a lie.
And even if it was true, RNY is not an independent committee, because:
1) its only benefactor contributed financially to Kavanaugh already, which by law is coordination
and
2) the filings for RNY and Kavanaugh both list Jack O’Donnell as a check signer. That’s DAMNING coordination.
Therefore, RNY is an authorized committee (actually, doubly so), and is violating about 100,000,000 laws in this race.

geoff, the first link does not work. I am dying to see the ad!!!!
frank Says:September 5th, 2008 at 9:49 am
Pundit,
Are you outraged that Jane Corwin is running a similar smear campaign against Mike Cole? Or are you just upset about Sam Hoyt (who committed much worse acts than Cole) being targeted because he is a fellow Democrat and friend?
anon Says:September 5th, 2008 at 9:55 am
thx bp for fixing the link, interesting but I wish I could see the ad on line. how could they get that wrong?! oh my!!!
i’ll have to get an artvoice at lunch. again thx.
Buffalopundit Says:September 5th, 2008 at 9:55 am
@frank - I’m not a Republican, so I couldn’t care less what they do to each other.
But I heard her anti-Cole ad on the radio this morning and though, oh shit, she went there!
geoff kelly Says:September 5th, 2008 at 9:55 am
anon,
The links work for me, sorry. Here it is againm though, just in case:

As for the Kavanaugh ad, you’ll have to pick up the paper. I disavow responsibility for that; I only make the (plentiful) typos in the articles.
buffalomom Says:September 5th, 2008 at 10:02 am
So if RNY is breaking the law - and it looks like they are - who are the election police? What’s the point of these laws if people just do whatever the hell they want - ethics and laws aside? I mean, I’d sort of like to think the laws are there for a reason and are enforced. And if they are bad laws, well then get them off the books once and for all.
frank Says:September 5th, 2008 at 10:19 am
My view is she must be down big time in the polls to go to that extreme. Has she even mentioned any of her ideas on what she wants to do if elected? All I have heard is she is against career politicians, but she supports Dale Volkers re-election…. said so on Hardline a few weeks back.
Buffalopundit Says:September 5th, 2008 at 10:21 am
If there’s one person who needs to be retired in this state, it’s Dale Volker.
mike hudson Says:September 5th, 2008 at 12:07 pm
Is anyone aware of the fact that Assemblyman William B. Magnarelli, D-Syracuse, chairman of the ethics panel now investigating Hoyt, has recieved $2,000 from Hoyt’s PAC over the years?
Didn’t think so.
Go look it up.
mike hudson Says:September 5th, 2008 at 12:11 pm
hey, there’s stephen nazwinko again!
stephen, tell us again about how many people have left buffalo and erie county since 1970. the figures you posted the other day were so ridiculous, according to the u.s. census bureau, i thought you might like to put them up again so we could all have another chuckle.
mike hudson Says:September 5th, 2008 at 12:19 pm
in case anyone missed it, little stephen said that the population decline in the city of buffalo was 0.2 percent annually since 1970, and made fun of joe mesi for saying erie county has lost 200,000 people since that time.
a quick check of u.s. census figures showed that county population dropped by 163,226 between 1970 and 2000, and that city population declined by 170,000 between 1970 and 2008.
all of which proved that the “moron” in the discussion was stephen nazwinko, not joe mesi.
i would regard all of his posts with a similar grain of salt, even though he tries hard to sound like he knows what he’s talking about.
Stephen Nazwisko Says:September 5th, 2008 at 2:48 pm
Hey fucktard
The district Mesi is going to fail at winning has experienced massive population growth in the 38 years in question.
Look it up, you fucking sandbox.
mike hudson Says:September 5th, 2008 at 3:21 pm
on monday, sept. 2, little stephen nazwinko posted the following about joe mesi’s contention that population had fallen by 200,000 since 1970.
“Seriously, what a FUCKING IDIOT. 200,000 people have left in 20 years?,,, Even if you meant the county, or the 8 counties, we’re basically stagnant since the 1970s - not shrinking!”
when i pointed out that, according to the u.s. census bureau, mesi’s figure was correct, or at least far more correct than nazwinko’s pulled-out-his-ass numbers, he calls me a “fucktard” and says it doesn’t matter anyway.
little stephen nazwinko is a coward and a liar.
his pathetic posts should be regarded accordingly.
mike hudson Says:September 5th, 2008 at 6:41 pm
i’m not sure how much detective work was involved in “uncovering” this link between responsible new york and mothers & fathers, as i just saw a mothers & fathers commercial on television and it says “paid for by responsible new york” right on it.

Dear Geoff
Did the BK ad check clear? (poor Barbara. I how she will get her judgeship then maybe she can find her moral compass again.)
I know you got to paid the rent and feed the puppies, But it is enough to get the old gumshoe journalism blues.
Ask Hudson he knows.
But remember that old journalist axiom: The truth is always for sale but can never be sold. And there is a whole lot “media” folks doing some hard core selling.
Joe S.
I never thought Joe Illuzzi would a role model for WNY journalism. Oh! the Horror!
Greg Says:September 7th, 2008 at 9:54 am
they just ran an anti Hoyt ad on wben and made some pretty damning claims. It’d be nice to know if they have any proof.
They claimed Hoyt hosted the party that resulted in Cole going home with an intern and that underage interns were allowed to drink there.
Personally his affair would be enough for me to vote against him, but I’m not in his district. Do they have proof of these additional claims against him?
mike hudson Says:September 7th, 2008 at 11:48 am
the mike cole thing is well documented. it’s mentioned in a piece i’m doing for tomorrow’s paper but it appeared in the buffalo news etc. comically, cole lost his position on the alcoholism and drug abuse subcommittee over it, a subcommittee sexy sam was/is the chairman of!
