Terry> Idiots..the lamp was wired to run on Canadian electricity..

The lamp can probably handle the fake, plastic and sanitized 120 volt 60 Hz electricity found throughout North America, but not Buffalo's authentic, genuine and real electricity.

It's not just the lamp:

Dresser $400 US
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/70103165
Dresser $600 CA
http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/70103165

That's TWO HUNDRED DOLLARS

But there seems to be no rhyme or reason at all, see for example this bed that is actually cheaper in Canada
$99 US
http://www.ikea.com/us/en/catalog/products/50021627
$89 CA
http://www.ikea.com/ca/en/catalog/products/50021627

Someone should start a blog dedicated to bringing down this injustice.

Canadian prices have always been more than in the US when only looking at the number on the price tag, it's just that we used to have a favorable exchange rate that balanced it out.

That said, it sucks that it fried the circuit. Have the electrician that comes out check the lamp, might be some crossed wires or something in it.

Mammut, in Swedish, means junk.
I concur with STEEL. Crummy circuit probably fried the lamp and itself. Check if any other lamps or electric items got cooked on that circuit.
At least you did your part for the lights out / green earth thing this weekend.

Sounds to me more like your circuit panel fried the lamp. I can't imagine how a simple 100 watt bulb could cause what you describe.

As for the price. Don't think of it as an over priced lamp. Think of it as a tax reduction incentive. As we have seen this kind of thing has been a tremendous incentive for Canadians to help pay Erie County taxes. That lamp may have saved you hundreds of dollars.
