Relatively simple solution? Slow the F*** down. Those are on and off ramps, not high-banked turns at a NASCAR track.

I agree completely with Steve. I had to travel the 990 last night at about 7pm. I drive a 4 wheel drive suv, and i did not feel comfortable going over 40mph. Despite the caravan of tow trucks and emergency vehicles up and down the center median pulling out spun out vehicles, people were flying past me going at least 65mph.
After years in wny, you’d think people would learn that the secret to winter driving is relatively simple, slowing down.

I bought Bridgestone Blizzaks myself and had no trouble in the last couple of slop storms we’ve had. Besides slowing down, key is getting snow tires. Every source I’ve read indicates that all-season tires are far inferior to snow tires in snow or slush. If you live in WNY, do yourself a favor and get a set of 4.

Only time I ever had a real issue in the snow was the winter my tires were close to bald. That was on my 1990 buick lesabre. All seasons worked fine on it.

All seasons work fine. It’s the hot-dog 4-wheel jerks who don’t adjust for conditions that we have to worry about spinning out and hitting us. I cannot believe the amount of agressive drivers we have here in WNY. Worse than MA or FL. Slow down!

It’s all about the tires. I think we should explore making winter tires mandatory like in Austria. We get worse conditions for longer periods of time. This could be achieved several ways:
1) by saying that if there’s an accident and you don’t have snow tires than your insurance won’t cover you; and/or,
2) legislation and fines

Gee, why not go all the way and mandate chains like they do on some mountain passes out west? And, if I’m in an accident in February without snow tires, but the roads are clear and dry, can my insurance company still refuse to cover? And, what level of snow tire should we mandate. $50 per tire? $100? $200? Is a some off-brand snow tire from Bob’s Waffle Hut & Tire Shop better than a $200 name brand all-season? WARNING — Can of worms being opened here!!!
It’s not “all about the tires.” Some tires are better than others, to be sure, but even the best tires don’t compensate for the asshole behind the wheel that tries to take a sharply curved on-ramp at double the posted speed in snow and ice while yacking away on his latest trendy bluetooth device and trying not to spill his $4 double latte on his leather seat. Or maybe watching TV on some sort of dashboard device, like the idiot that cut me off — twice — going home yesterday. God forbid he miss Wheel of Fortune!

I agree that requiring winter tires goes a bit too far. Causation, rather than equipment, should determine who’s at fault. Slow down. People’s communtes in Buffalo are short enough that the extra 5-10 minutes isn’t gonna kill you. Reckless drivers should be given a ticket as well as suffering the financial consequences (via increased insurance premiums) of causing an accident - regardless of whether it is some metrosexual sipping a latte or Daniel Boone returning to his rural retreat.
People are dreaming though if they think all-season’s provide as much traction in bad conditions as snow tires, but if you don’t endanger other people …go nuts.
