What strikes me is that we have hollowed out the middle class (which started with the deindustrialization of our region and country) and continue to buy into this mindset that workers are the problem.

Mike...right on dude...

Collins makes a lot of sense but...
The thing that kills me is that everyone looks to the private sector as a benchmark for benefits and pay. Private sector benefits aren't that great. What strikes me is that we have hollowed out the middle class (which started with the deindustrialization of our region and country) and continue to buy into this mindset that workers are the problem. This starts at the federal level where a large share of our tax dollars are carried away and never seen again. Much of it is the US trying to police the world.

I just came back from the German Alps and found we still operate bases as resort areas:
http://benefits.military.com/misc/installations/Base_Content.jsp?id=6020

Now I love to wave the flag, and I know that our men in uniform need a little R&R, but we can't afford socially and finacially to pull 20% plus of everyone's income out of the region.

Erie county workers actually don't seem to make that much money when I've seen and heard about their salaries.

I think we just look at the whole thing upside down. God I know my opinion of this isn't popular (mostly because some people abuse the system) but our taxes are really relatively low...the problem is that these funds are not funneled to things that make our region efficient and productive. Instead they go to haliburton and for $1600 toilet seats instead of high speed trains, awesome schools, and infrastructure improvements such as for all of our aging bridges and roads.

Anyway, happy new year
