1) Do you think that if Upstate told Downstate “we don’t want to be dependent on your wealth”, that we would also be freed from the state laws that helped make us dependent in the first place? I think not.
Many people have suggested that Upstate become an independent state (New New York?) not because we would be free from that money-sucking Downstate economy, but rather because we would be free from the bureaucracy that it is principally responsible for creating. With that independence we might be able to pull ourselves out of our economic predicament; but with that gorilla on our backs it seems out of reach, and hence our current dependence.
