Buffalo Citizen Says:May 1st, 2007 at 1:39 pm
Propaganda:
The spreading of ideas, information, or rumor for the purpose of helping or injuring an institution, a cause, or a person.
Here we have a classic example of distortion of the truth. The history of Buffalo’s waterfront in it’s thriving days of operation provided for the settlement of the west, the increase in Buffalo’s population and an economic status equal to that of London and Paris.
The above cartoon depicts everything in the history of Buffalo’s booming Erie Canal days as specifically only a ghetto of high crime and deliberately paints scorn of the worst kind using a broad brush.
It is absolutely mind boogling that the must powerful and distinguished story of Buffalo’s part in the defense of slaves is being marginalized to the maximum. Quaker Efner protected escaped pre civil war slaves at Dug’s Dive Tavern. This is an essential component of the battle for human rights and what seperates enlightenment and freedom from tyranny and oppression.
Would any of us allow a Bass Pro store to be built next to Martin Luther King’s church in Atlanta? Would we allow a Bass Pro to be built on the Gettysburg Battlefield Monument? It is of the highest importance that all Buffalonians treasure our one central place that was the spark that ignited this city and the spot where slavery was bravely resisted. These things should be magnified and celebrated instead of being down played and demonized.
This political cartoon is deceptively misleading of public opinion and fails to present the validity of commerce and ship building and workers and capitalistic enterprizes involved in building this great city in the Canal District.
The true demon is our tax money and treasury being prostituted out to selected corporations and developers without bids or without a public process that is both undemocratic and exclusive. The destruction of our communities rich and prominent place that is no different than the launching pad in Cape Kennedy or the room where Jefferson wrote the Constitution.
If we as Buffalonians turn our backs on our most vital history and pay for Old Mall River then we too are as guilty for the destruction of this community as those who imposed Rich Stadium being built in Orchard Park or the University of Buffalo construction in Amherst. Those projects were in fact protested by what is now termed obstructionism in Buffalo. Again the facts show that those foolish projects where also directly imposed by the Larry Quinns and Mindy Rich’s of that time. It was a mistake then as it is a mistake now to down grade and subjugate the public. In In my opinion this is a far worse disaster than the Blizzard of 77 or the Arborgedden Storm. The damage done by Bass Pro is a selfish and wrongful degradation of our cities history. We are not learning and appreciating our own amazing past but embracing decline and ignorance. We are going to pay and pay to enrich a private business without representation. The government of Bass Pro must end. We are being taxed to pay for building Bass Pro.
This is worse than a silver bullet. It is a cluster bomb.
This cartoon shows how lacking critical thinking is at the Buffalo News. They have become cheer leaders and disseminators of disinformation.
